Growth scan ok, but now another problem

So I just went for my extra scan as the doctor was worried my bump was on the small side. Showed that baby boy Riley is doing ok, weighs about 3lbs 11oz, a bit on the small side but still fine! Then the sonographer noticed some fluid in his left kidney. His left urethra is also swollen. This is apparently common in boys but obviously still has me worried! He will need antibiotics at birth and a scan when he is a few days old. Sometimes the problem rectifies itself and sometimes they need surgery. I am so anxious and just don't feel I can relax for the next two months until he is here. I can't even begin to imagine how horrible it will be if he needs surgery. Has any one else experienced this?

  • *HUGS* one good thing is they know now hope it all turns out ok x x
  • Thanks hun @SamiUK yeah and I don't have a follow up except with the pediatrician at birth so they can't be too worried as I'm having no more scans and am back to community midwife care, don't even see my consultant again till labour time! Just can't believe it, its one thing after another!
  • Try not to stress then hun i know its a lot easier said then done! But like you said they can't be to worried by it if you don't need another scan just enjoy your shelf whilst its there! lol x
  • My son had the same thing in his scan. He came out, had antibiotics, and was fine. It fixed itself. Just remember try not to stress too much! Baby needs you as calm as you can be
  • Thanks both of you @SamiUK and @Pinkigirl
Glad to hear someones went away after the antibiotics, they said that's very possible so just gotta keep praying! Has your son had any problems since? I promise to try and not stress as much!
  • His issues are all intestinal. Nothing to so with that. He's pretty healthy.
  • My baby's father has urinary reflux and when I told my doctors they told me that what your going through is the sign of it. I am having a girl and she does not have it, and yes it is more common with boys. As long as it is treated and known it is absolutly fine! But make sure it is treated because rylie's father was not treated and he now has very bad kidney damage cause of it. I hope everything goes great with your little one(:
  • Are his intestinal problems to do with the fluid/swelling? @Pinkigirl

Thank-you @lindseynicole96 I will definitely be getting him fully checked out. I have had rheumatoid arthritis, diagnosed at 15 months so I'm pretty ok talking to doctors and getting information etc, I won't let it lie! I read urinary reflux can be one of the causes of what he has (I read on my notes its called hydronephrosis) and will make sure I get it checked
  • Good luck hon! Hope everything goes great with you and your little Riley!! (Our babies share the same name lol) Wishing you a great pregnancy and delivery and healthy baby boy(:
  • Ah thank-you :-) yeah I noticed that, like your spelling too! Its a name we both love but is also my mum and stepdads surname which is a nice family link @lindseynicole96
  • I was told the same thing n of course I worried anyway but about the time they sent my to a specialist it had fixed itself more than likely u will get more ultrasounds n your lil boy will be fine its scary b/c u think the worse but don't he should be fine my doctor said that as long as its diagnosed while u are pregnant its great even if it don't correct itself b/c not getting diagnose causes farther problems from it being untreated but right now all he would need is meds
  • @Hot2Cold87 how is your little one now? I'm not being scanned again, just 8 weeks to go and I'm back under the care of my community midwife. I realised the same thing last night, if it weren't for me having a bit of a small bump I would never have had an extra scan and we wouldnt have known about it and it could have been a lot worse. It is very common for it to fix itself and I think I need to focus on that, and deal with the other stuff if and when it comes up. Thanks hun (*)
  • Better now I've had a couple of more scares but nothing to do with that! n yea I thought my doctor was trying to just make me feel better saying it was common in boys etc but surely enough it worked out I was about 30 wks when they told me n when i was about 34 wks (dnt really remember dates but if u look under my discussions i was freaking out asking questions also when I was going through it) i went to specialist n he said its fine I don't have the biggest bump either but baby measuring fine no worries about not being check they will know what to look for
  • My little girl was born with hydronephrosis of both her kidneys she its three and on daily antibiotics.
  • Why @Eeyore

When are you due @Hot2Cold87 I'm sure our boys will be fine, let's stay positive!!
  • Me! Uneed to drink plently of water and lay off the sugers. My specialist told me that. My baby was born yesterday and it went away no surgery needed just anti biotics
  • I'm due on September 13th i cant wait a lil nervous b/c im a ftm but ready :) n yes they will be big strong boys running around soon keeping us busy lol
  • @anadoll92 thanks for the tips, I will make sure I keep that up! Glad your little one is ok and congratulations!! Hope you are enjoying every minute!

@Hot2Cold87 Not long to go then!! I am sure you will be fine! If he is anything like his brother most certainly!! Good luck hun, and let me know how it all goes :-)
  • Thanks and good luck to u n u also let me know how you n lil Riley are doing ill be waiting for updates lol
  • My son has it pretty severe :( and in both kidneys I'm being induced next week at 37 weeks and a week or 2 after he is born he is gonna need surgery to fix it
  • Ah hun I am sorry :-( looking like my little man only has it in one thank goodness. I hope it all goes ok next week, and his operation goes well when he has it. I suppose the ood thing is it was picked up and he is getting the treatment he needs right? Take care and let me know how it all goes x @Mackenzies_mama2010
  • Yes they found it at my 20 week scan it was just in his right kidney then went back a few week's ago for another u/s n he has more fluid and it was in both
  • Good luck Hun praying for you and your little one
  • Thank-you both so much @kristaf22 and @momof22be

@Mackenzies_mama2010 mine was fine at 20 week scan, nothing seen on it. I only had this extra scan as my bump is measuring slightly small which is lucky I guess otherwise we wouldn't have known. Keep your chin up, he will be fine (*)
