Stupid Doctors...SMH

So my LO has been constipated since wednesday last week. I have tried everything I know to do to help him (flax seed oil, olive oil, peas, apple sauce, apple juice, prunes, prune juice..etc...lol) and still nothing. Poor thing was in so much pain trying to push the poo out and the only time he would be able to to was when I helped him along. Well I finally decided I was gonna take him to the doctor on Monday....boy was that a mistake! UGH!!

So first they weigh him and check his length, and the nurse scolds me for not bringing him in for his 6 month appt. I told her that since we are a no vax family, and he was doing fine, I didnt see a need to bring him in. Well then she started to say something about his vax but stopped herself when she saw my face (LoL). Then the doc comes in and asks us some questions, about his diet. I tell him that I breast feed, and if he is still hungry an hour after that I will give him some solids. Well then he shows me the weight chart and tells me that Ollie is to little for his age, and the reason he is constipated is because he isnt getting enough nutrition from my breast milk. And, "he is all for breast feeding, and thinks its great that I have done it this long" but....Then he tells me I need to start supplementing him with formula, that he is not getting enough breast milk. I tell him no way in hell was I giving my son formula. The the dumb A** spends the next 10 min trying to convince me about how he is all for breast feeding but my son needs the formula to survive. I finally look him square in the face and tell him that he can talk until he is blue in the face but I will NOT give him formula. That my son is perfectly healthy for his age, and his weight has steadily increased, so there is no worry about him "surviving". Well then the doc leaves the room, is gone for 15 min comes back and tries it again. I tell him "look I am not giving him formula. If you are so PRO breast feeding, then how about you brainstorm ways for me to increase my supply. Or better yet, why dont you tell me what he needs from this synthetic formula and I will supplement him another way." I was so angry! My husband said that I gave him the 'look' lol. Then I say "you know I came here to get Oliver so help with his tummy problem, not a lecture about my breast feeding! The doc then tells me that he cant do anything for him and to wait another week and follow up! I was so angry! I told him that this was a waste of my time, and thanks for not helping my son! I was fuming when I left there! I cant wait until we arent military any more and can find a naturopath that will be of more help!

Sorry this was so long..but I needed to vent.....On the upside I called my mom and she helped me figure out a regimen, and Ollie finally had some relief today!

  • Uhg. I'm tired with Drs claiming to promote and support breastfeeding but then cram formula at you. That was my sons drs go to "fix" for his allergy issues.
I stopped going and am now going to a Naturopath which actually HELPED me.
Was not a waste of time or money and gave me answers and solutions. I also do not vax.
Its worth looking into to see if they can help you with his constipation.

  • If you're not opposed, and he gets that backed up again, you can always give him half of a glycerin suppository as well. It's not anything he has to consume, and it'll help him get it out without hurting. My son actually got constipated WORSE with formula back when he was a baby. I didn't produce enough and was young and less educated about how to increase supply, etc. I had to help him along with it too, and he was so sad. :/ Hope Ollie gets regular soon. :)
  • Use 30ml of warm water and quarter of a teaspoon of brown sugar. This can be used daily and helps with constipation in babies. We use this with our son who gets constipated bad and also when our others were younger.

Hope it helps a little bit.
  • Yay for naturopaths! Hopefully you get one soon!! That's rediculous!!!
  • @littlefae Yeah my mom knows one in our area. I called him today and he charges $115 for the first visit. If I cant get him regular I am going to take Ollie.

@RTMommy That is my next option. My mom said she would come over and do it (lol she is an RN so she is used to this stuff) As for the formula, that was my thought exactly! I was just so angry that the doc didnt even try to help him!

@dadof2n1togo does it have to be brown sugar? I tried just regular sugar it didnt work.

    @bahamamama4828 it was totally rediculous!!

  • That's about how much it cost me and was worth every penny. He spent and hour and a half with us. Answered questions, explained in detail the allergies and intolerences.
But for constipation, I would try to get him regular. Introducing solids does that, my lo finally pooped today after going four days and we just started up with solids lol.

Your dr made me so angry, of course so did I and the GI specialist I saw who also tried to push formula only because she felt bad for me for the diet I was on for my son... even though the diet I'm on is what we should be eating anyway! Tons of veggies, I can have chicken pork, lamb and turkey, and a few kinds of fruits. Tree nuts. The stupid GI even said he felt bad and wanted to go buy me a big mac... uh I don't look like I need a big mac I'm over weight and on a very healthy diet dick... arg! Sorry, they just piss me off so much.

So no more for me, were not using them unless sick like fever and what not and then we have a family dr who my doula recomended to me. So no more formula worthless drs for me.

Good luck and I hope he poops soon.

Oh... my mom told me what she used to do with us was take those nose bulb suckers, fill it with room temp water mixed with a tiny bit of shampoo and barely insert the tip and squirt the water up the bumb and we would poop right away... haven't tried it and not sure if its still considered safe lmao but its something to run by your mom and see if she okays it. The shampoo is because it contains that glycerin in it.
  • @littlefae Ya thats what my mom said about the naturopath. I am really thinking that me and my husband also should go. I think we need a complete overhaul. Plus my hubbys allergies are awful, and I think he could get help with that. I have done all I know to do with cutting out fragrance in our home, and helping him cut back on gluten. That stupid doc made me livid! I was on fire when I left that office! I am with you, no more going there unless my hand is falling off lol! Thanks for the bulb suckers idea! I am going to run that past my mom tonight and see what she thinks! It sounds like it would work! I think its total bull crap that the doc wouldnt even try to help him...it was like he was just punishing me for not taking his advice for the no formula thing. I am sure that my comments probably upset some people on here about the formula...and I didnt mean to..i completely understand that some women just dont have any other choice...but I do have a choice and I am not giving up on my breast milk!

@rileyandme lol at the strawberry explosion, I bet that was not fun! Thanks he is starting to feel better, which makes me feel better! I hate seeing him in so much pain. Makes me wanna cry! :-((
  • My lo had a constipation problem at 3 months old and she is exclusively breastfeed also. When I took her in the doc told me to skip a feeding and give her pedialyte instead and keep rotating. And to try taking her temp rectally... Well a day of that she still didn't go which made it day 6 by then so he prescribed her a laxative. He had also said she could have a suppository but I was unsure which one was safe to use so I never tried it., but I would be mad as hell if he told me she had to be on formula instead.
  • That's the best thing about NDs. They will sit down with you even if it takes 2 hours. They actually know about nutrition and not tell you to give baby cereal at 4 mo bleh! Well, you know lol. You will be super happy getting one and learning how to deal with allergies for hubby. They are trained in lactation! ! Lol
  • My daughter was regular as clockwork when ebf... At 5 months I started to wean her and it's much harder for her to poop now alp her day feeds are formula. The brown sugar in warm water always did it for my son, for some reason it does need to be brown cooking sugar....
  • Try baby sapositories (sp) they work wonders
  • It needs to be brown sugar because it's the molasses in it that helps with constipation
  • Oh I too apologize if my comment about formula offended anyone it wasn't meant to it does have its out there for a reason, BUT for woman like myself and OP who know we don't need it or want it. It get irritating when the drs push it just as a quick fix when really there are other options that can be explored and we are willing to explore them.

Its totally worth seeing a naturopath for allergies and well worth your money. Ill be going back when my lo is 9mo and have him muscled tested again to see if he has grown out of anything and his over all health and to also have him adjusted.

  • @ashley_smashley
Yeah we were told brown sugar. I think it's to do with the difference in processing.
